RSVP for A Narthex Symposium

Bridge-building and the vocation of engineering

Thurs, Nov 20, 7-9 pm

St. Philip’s Episcopal Church (720 Dr Martin Luther King Jr St)

In our first hour together, a panel of engineers will discuss with us how their vocation envisions designing and building a better world.

In our second hour, we will literally be bridge-building!

In this inaugural year of Narthex Symposia, “vocation” is our focus. From the Latin for “calling,” we are asking members in our Indy communities:

“Who in your community helped you discern your calling? What literature moved you in the direction of your present work?”

“How does your calling overlap with your job/career?”

“What practical wisdom do you have for a young adult seeking a calling similar to yours?”

Come and learn with us!

Katie Ito | Sept 23

See Katie’s Work

Katie shared about her vocations as local artist and chef. We talked about the (cook!)books and community that have informed her pursuit of the good life right here in Indy.

Then we had a chance to design our own postcards with foodie stamps Katie made, watercolor Fall garden vegetables, and share personal recipes and food memories that have formed our diverse outlooks on life.

Dr. Brittany Garvin-Hudson | Oct 30

Dr. Brittany shared the ways the Lord has lit her path from a family farm to pediatric oncology visits to inspiring science educators. She spoke of a grandmother who was her first model of a scientist by the ways she ran a farm with practical creativity, thrift, and love. She related anecdotes of what culturally responsive education can look like in STEM fields, honoring every student as an image-bearer and deep well of unique knowledge.

In the second hour, we had a wonder-filled time dissecting owl pellets. We also spread a table brimming with gorgeously illustrated books that honored life on earth. Covering topics from insect lifecycles to BIPOC scientists to Indigenous water protectors, these books invited us to celebrate a resilient Creation who daily bears witness to a Creator who delight in giving good gifts to God’s children.
